Student spotlight: “Food for Thought”
April 10, 2015
Have you ever wondered about exotic foods you see at the grocery store? Do you want to see if they’re good without having to waste money purchasing them? Three ambitious Nazareth students, Bobby Cheely (Junior), Liam Gram (Freshman), and Jeremy Kolasa (Freshman), have solved that problem with their YouTube channel, “Food For Thought.”
So far, they have a series called, “Consumption Connoisseurs” where Liam and Bobby try a wide range of exotic fruits from dragonfruit to horned melons. When asked about their inspiration for the channel Bobby explained, “We were walking through the Mariano’s and we saw this weird looking kind of vegetable and I thought to myself, ‘I wonder if they have dragonfruit here,’ because I’ve always wanted to try one and they are the coolest fruits ever. We looked around and sure enough, they had a whole, small section of exotic fruits and we thought ‘this would be fantastic to put on YouTube.’” Liam added, “We were really thinking, ‘I wonder what these taste like this must be awesome because I doubt anyone’s ever had a Vietnamese Rambutan and no one just says, ‘Oh I had those for dinner last night,’ so we thought we should take this knowledge of our fruits and we should spread it to the masses.”
A subscriber gains entertainment as well as knowledge by watching the videos, according to these young men. Bobby explains, “It’s all knowledge that we give so you could definitely say, ‘Yeah I’ve heard of a dragon fruit,’ and you know people who’ve tried it, recommended it, or not recommended it in some cases…you definitely gain the knowledge of what is out there other than an apple, pear, and grape. You also get to know more about a lot of the different cultures out there because a lot of these fruits are from Central South America, and some from Asia, so we get people thinking, ‘What else is out there?’.”
Bobby and Liam started the channel and recently Jeremy has gotten more involved and will be featured in the videos next season. Bobby and Liam met through Little League Baseball and Jeremy connected with Liam at the Lights Out For Cancer Event last Spring. So far they don’t have an overload of subscribers to their channel but they hope that through word of mouth and social media their channel can become more popular. They have an Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter account for their YouTube channel. Liam Gram also has a personal YouTube channel that he frequently uses to promote Food For Thought.
As for the future, they are taking a break from the channel for a little while but will start posting new videos for Season 2 in April. Some changes to the channel include branching off from just fruits and exploring other types of food. They also hope to do different shows on their channel other than Consumption Connoisseurs, such as podcasts, video blogs, and game show like videos.
So if you ever are curious about what kind of delicious fruits are out there in the world or even in your nearby grocery store, check out “Consumption Connoisseurs” from the channel, Food For Thought. You may be surprised by how good some of these bizarre fruits are.
