Fads that didn’t last

If you’re not in style, you’re out of it; it’s as simple as that nowadays. The top trends of the 2000s have left millennials emptying out their closets every year, escaping the old looks that once were in and buying the new look that will only be replaced a few months later. In today’s world, it’s easy to use the term “FAD”, to define our style. A fad is defined as an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities; a craze. That’s right. Remember that pair of jeans you wore last week, well ya they are no longer in. Let’s check out a few of the FADS that never lasted in the past 10 years.

Silly Bands – Circa 2010, the year of rubber bands that were in shapes of all of the animals and foods you could imagine. Silly bands, created by BCP productions, launched in the spring and summer of 2010. Coming in a pack of 12, silly bands were available at your local grocery store or your local gas station. The “cool” thing was to have as many as you possibly could on one wrist, and wear them going up your whole arm. Silly bands faded away into the darkness of FAD world and haven’t returned to the level of popularity they achieved in 2010.

Mood Rings- Mood rings were a significant piece of jewelry every tween and teenage girl once had. This was a vacation must buy in a surf shop on the beach and just simply the trend for anyone who truly believed that these rings reflected your mood for the times when you had no idea what it was. Mood rings were a hit from the ‘05’s through approximately ‘08, ‘09. It was until then that people began to realize the only thing that could truly know the mood you are in is yourself.

Justin Bieber haircut- Baby, oooo. That haircut of Justin Bieber’s in 2010 needed to leave asap. It swamped the world of wanna-be Biebers, in hopes of swooning young belieber girls their age. Commonly misconceived for the ‘skater haircut”, the Bieber haircut was a short, yet flowy in the front kind of haircut to a young boy, who truly just wanted a reason to flick his hair back and forth for the ladies. It was until 2011-2012 when Justin Bieber cut his hair and ultimately let the FAD of his haircut go away.

Colored Skinny Jeans- Along with the Justin Bieber hairdo, came the swamp of colored skinny jeans in both boys’ fashion as well as girls’. Stores like Zumiez, as well as Target started to carry an array of bright and neutral toned jeans with the skinny look to them. Although inspired by Justin Bieber’s look, skinny jeans have continued to be a constant universal style trend in both girls’ and boys’ fashion and look like they will never go out of style, even though the color might.
It’s easy to look back on a few years ago and realize our style is nowhere near what it used to be. As one tries to escape change, remember that you’ll will always have to change your closet, whether you like it or not.
