Environmental awareness is everywhere today. Just take a look outside, and there are signs of environmental alertness all around us. People carry recycled bags, wear shirts that say “I Heart Earth” and are in general more environmentally friendly lately. This past week at Naz, the Environmental Advocates and Just Us especially raised environmental awareness with Green Week, which lasted from April 23 to April 27. Over the course of the week, the Environmental Advocated, in conjunction with Just Us, headed many various events to help alert the school to the importance of the environment and “going green.” The bridge was also decorated with fun sayings and brightly colored images that told the students that “the earth was what [they] all had in common” and to “go green.”
The week started out with green ribbons being passed out to every student in homeroom for them to proudly display and show off their love for the earth. The Environmental Advocates also made bracelets out of ribbon and recycled pop tabs and sold these at lunch. The money raised while selling the bracelets will be used to adopt an animal at Brookfield Zoo.
However, the main event of the week was the door-decorating contest. Each homeroom was asked to decorate the outside of their door from Monday to Thursday using only recycled material, and the homeroom with the best decorated door received a free breakfast, compliments of the Environmental Advocates. Thursday after school, members of the faculty judged the doors, and decided on a winner-K305, Dr. Z’s homeroom. The club also gave an honorable mention to the English hallway for their recycled visual interpretation of The Lorax and their portrayal of “Naz Speaks for the Trees.” Overall, the club feels as though Green Week at Naz was a huge success, and they really hope that they helped the school become more environmentally aware in time for Earth Day.
