Nazareth Academy has three exciting new clubs this year: Astronomy Club, Health Careers, and Young Entrepreneurs.
The new Astronomy Club is moderated by Nazareth math teacher, Ms. Bell, who has dedicated her time to teaching interested students and faculty members about astronomy. Ms. Bell spent over sixty hours during the summer researching websites, photos, music, and activities to teach and show the students. Students Courtney Urzen, Brian Salcedo, and Jenny Chlipala volunteered their lunch time to sit at the table during the Activities Fair and successfully added twenty members to the roster, indicating a great deal of interest in the topic.
Astronomy Club plans to meet the first available Monday of every month. Their first meeting was a huge success containing jokes and included an interesting topic of how to use the planisphere. Sophomore Courtney Urzen described a planisphere as “a simple dial for identifying which constellations are in view during the various seasons and time of night.” Everyone is welcome to join Astronomy Club. As their new slogan says, “Astronomy Club is expanding. We need more space!”
Moderated by science teacher Mrs. Sheila Emmett, the Health Careers club was designed to teach students more about various careers in different medical fields. According to Mrs. Emmett, they chose the name Health Careers “to include more than just medical doctors. This way we hopefully can address all of the fields related to medicine, including veterinary medicine, and chiropractic.”
Mrs. Emmett’s degrees in human physiology, and experience teaching at the medical school of The University of Chicago make her the perfect leader for this group, as do her many years of professional medical research experience.
Health Careers members will get a look into what they would have to learn when they are in college and what they will have to graduate with in order to obtain the job. Many of Mrs. Emmett’s AP Biology students have gotten involved and they look forward to welcoming a variety of guest speakers throughout the year.
Formerly called the economics club, the new and improved Young Entrepreneurs club is led this year by Mr. Anthony Gonzalez, and student leader Matthew Henick. The club is comprised of a group of students “that have come together to learn about how to create a business and how to network. These students are very interested in learning about how to use money properly,” Henick explained.
All of these new clubs continue to welcome new members. Those interested should contact club moderators.
