Stephanie Calderon is the newest member of the Science Department. Calderon teaches Biology, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, and she is now entering her eighth year of teaching. Calderon is happy in her new position. She said, “I really love how small Naz is and how much of a community that builds and I really just appreciate how close everybody is.”
Calderon attended Augustana College where she started as a chemistry major, however she switched to biology after her Sophomore year. “Biology stuck out to me because I love the life sciences and the organic stuff that goes into it and how we have evolved to be the way that we are,” she said.
Calderon was inspired to become a teacher by those who taught her. “I had really good teachers growing up; I had teachers that pushed me when I didn’t want to be pushed or when I didn’t think that I could do things. They knew that I could and pushed my limits, and I wanted to do that for somebody else,” said Calderon.
Prior to teaching at Nazareth, Calderon taught at Marist, St. Joseph, and Eisenhower High Schools. Calderon said, “I really love this block schedule, I didn’t think I would like it as much as I do.” As a hands-on teacher she is able to get her students moving around and able to see the science in action in the lengthened class period. “I also love how friendly everybody is: teachers, faculty, and the students are really friendly too,” said Calderon.
Outside of teaching Calderon enjoys reading, traveling, watching movies, and playing with her dog. Calderon is also the Head Coach of the Junior Varsity Cheer Team at Nazareth.
