At the start of the school year, in the location of the former Collaboratory, a state-of-the-art STEM lab was unveiled. The brainchild of Science Department Chair and Physics teacher Matt Foster, the lab has been in the works since 2020.
The lab is outfitted with all of the best in modern STEM lab technology: a laser cutter, two 3D printers, and two resin printers. It is also equipped with sleek new moving lab tables and stools.
The STEM lab provides all Naz students with technology that allows them hands-on opportunities to learn. Foster said, ‘‘The STEM Lab is a unique addition to Naz; it allows all students to use equipment they otherwise would not have access to.’’
Currently, the lab is home to the AP Physics class and STEAM Club, but Foster is interested in creating a STEM lab class in the future, too. ‘‘It would be like a modern-day shop class,” he said.
Foster has paired up with Art teacher Hannah Salsman to create The STEAM Club. This club combines science and art and allows students to experiment with the equipment. Salsman said, ‘‘Foster and I got together to create the STEAM Club to add an element of art to the STEM lab.’’
The possibilities for collaborations are great and Foster is eager to get more clubs into the lab. “Any club can use the lab, if they want to print out their logos onto keychains or even if they want to print something to use in their club. For example, Baking Club can print out cookie cutters,” said Foster.
Many students have had an opportunity to use the lab. Freshman Andrea Nunez said, “The STEM lab exposes students to new opportunities and gives all students the opportunity to push their education to a new level.”
Nunez is excited about new developments in the STEM lab and is considering ways the Future Healthcare Professionals Club can utilize the STEM lab.
Senior Alania Milon has enjoyed the STEM lab, too. “The school needed a STEM lab to provide different skills to students,” said Milon.
