Award season has begun. The Golden Globes and the SAG awards have just passed, bringing the most prestigious award show anyone in the film industry can attend or receive an award from: the Oscars.

Otherwise known as the Academy Awards, this show is a time for the common people to root for their favorite movies and actors/actresses of the year, hoping they’ll beat out the other nominees. It’s also a time to reflect on what the media is showing us and wants the people to see, considering  some of the most popular movies of the year are recognized.

The Golden Globes made it clear that that is was lacking in diversity. The lack of people of color amongst the nominees was an unfortunate circumstance, especially when considering all of the diverse people in Hollywood that should and could have been nominated. Apparently, the Oscars have taken a page from the Golden Globes’ book and have absolutely taken it to the extreme.

What I mean by that is that none of the actors or actresses nominated for an Oscar are anything other than white.

This wouldn’t have been anything to worry about if it were 1950, but it’s 2016. Despite his many triumphs, even Martin Luther King Junior wasn’t able to stop the internalized racism the United States is plagued with. The only thing that’s different about this year’s Oscars is that the production quality is better.

Possible nominations for the Oscars could be Idris Elba in “Beasts of No Nation”(which he just won a SAG award for) or Michael B. Jordan in “Creed”. Despite these talented actors not being nominated, “Straight Outta Compton”, one of the films that actually was diverse was only nominated for one Oscar. To put the cherry on top, all of those invited to accept the award were white.

Thankfully, this year’s problematic Oscars has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the country. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite has taken up a large following on Twitter, showing it’s not only a few people upset over the lack of diverse nominations for the Oscars. Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has understandably decided to boycott the Oscars. At the Golden Globes, actor Oscar Isaac spoke on Hollywood’s racial bias, “[A lack of diversity in Hollywood] is still happening. There’s not a lot of us. And it’s difficult for people who [don’t look like] the status quo in this country to get great roles. And it’s happening a little bit more, and I feel humbled, honored, and blessed to have the opportunity to do that. And hopefully, that’ll happen more — the people that cast films and TV shows, hopefully they’ll be able to see past their limited ideas of what ethnicity is.”

Due to this much need backlash the Academy Awards President, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, has claimed that the Academy will be making reforms for future nominations, “The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up. These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition.”

Maybe 2017 will be the year of change. Maybe the Golden Globes and SAG awards will have passed to bring the world to the Oscars. And maybe, just maybe, there won’t be any backlash towards the award show because there will be diversity. Not only because it’s wrong for there to be only white actors nominated, but because the people want and need diversity.
